In a chilling turn of events in Imo State, unidentified gunmen have killed a U.S.-based Nigerian returnee and abducted his wife in Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area. The incident occurred on Sunday evening and has thrown the community into a state of fear and uncertainty.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim, originally from Ihiala in Anambra State and said to be a serving soldier in the United States, had just returned to Nigeria and was inspecting a plot of land he intended to purchase. He arrived at the site near Golden Estate and Abba Father Avenue in a Toyota Highlander SUV, accompanied by his wife and local land agents.
Tragically, their visit was cut short when they were ambushed by armed men wearing masks. While others managed to escape with injuries, the returnee was shot dead after reportedly resisting the attackers. His wife was forcefully taken away by the assailants, who fled into a nearby forest. The victim’s body and vehicle were later recovered at the scene.
ZENTSFM Radio has confirmed from the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, that the Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, has launched a full-scale investigation and directed the Owerri Area Commander to take charge of the case.
As of now, there has been no contact from the abductors, and the search for the woman continues. Meanwhile, the community of Umuguma and surrounding areas—such as Irete, Nekede, and Avu—are on edge, with residents expressing growing concerns over the rising wave of insecurity.
Security agencies are urging the public, especially land buyers and agents, to exercise caution and promptly report any suspicious activity.
