Calabar, Nigeria — In a landmark move aimed at strengthening ties with indigenes living abroad, Governor Bassey Edet Otu of Cross River State has officially inaugurated the Cross River State Diaspora Commission (CRSDC). The ceremony, held on Tuesday at his temporary office in Calabar, marks a strategic effort by the state to harness the potential of its diaspora community for development.
Speaking at the event, Governor Otu highlighted the commission’s pivotal role in shaping the state’s international image and promoting foreign investment.
“I welcome and congratulate you all. You have an important job to do: manage our people in the diaspora and build the image of Cross River on a global scale,” he said. “We expect you to start work immediately and build on the foundation we have laid.”
The CRSDC is tasked with bridging the gap between the state government and Cross Riverians abroad, with a focus on investment mobilization, cultural exchange, and international partnerships.
Dr. Bong Duke, Vice Chairman and CEO of the State Planning Commission, expressed his satisfaction with the commission’s formal launch, noting that it followed a rigorous screening and clearance process by the State House of Assembly.
“I feel fulfilled today. We’ve worked hard to bring this vision to life, and I’m confident that this team will deliver,” Duke stated.
Chairman of the newly formed commission, Mr. Otu Esu Okor, described the opportunity as an “honorable call to service,” promising commitment and results from the diaspora team.
“We are grateful to His Excellency for giving us this platform to contribute to the growth of our beloved state. Talks are already ongoing with diaspora partners to attract investments,” Okor assured.
